Following on from the success of our Beethoven Symphony cycle, The Outcry Ensemble presented its Brahms cycle where we performed all of the Brahms Symphonies and Concertos across four concerts with the Ein Deutsches Requiem as our fifth concert.
BEETHOVEN 251 FESTIVAL ⬇
The Outcry Ensemble presented its first Beethoven Symphony Cycle, of eight Beethoven symphonies performed in four days at St Johns Waterloo, followed by a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at St Johns Smith Square as a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s UK, the UK’s leading Alzheimer’s charity. The whole festival, in the post COVID-19 period of 2021 was in aid of freelance musicians. We were very proud to be able improve musicians fees thanks to fundraising and ticket sale success.

St. John’s Smith Square
The Outcry Ensemble and conductor James Henshaw make a welcome return to SJSS to explore and celebrate London’s impact through the ages on musical culture. May’s concert, part of a festival that continues throughout the year, features Walton's renowned 1st Symphony, completed in the capital in 1935.

Stories We Tell Ourselves
Stories We Tell Ourselves by Thomas Guthrie, Vicky Olusanya and the Lewisham Creative Chorus, is a world premiere event featuring songs from Schubert’s ‘Die schöne Müllerin’ in a new arrangement by Thomas Guthrie, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of its composition.
A collaborative event launching two projects in a single programme, Stories We Tell Ourselves is presented by Music and Theatre for All.
Wednesday 26th April 2023 at World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens, Vauxhall & via Livestream from 6:00pm, then at The Fellowship Inn, Bellingham at 8:30pm.
Brahms Symphony No. 4
In the 4th and final concert of the 2 week festival, audiences experienced Brahms' Double Concerto followed by his profound 4th Symphony. The dialogue between violin, cello, and orchestra in the concerto intertwined with the symphony's emotional intensity, showcasing Brahms' mastery of form and orchestration.
Brahms Symphony No. 3
Our 3rd concert presented Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 alongside his introspective 3rd Symphony. The piano concerto's expressive depth harmonized with the symphony's melodic richness, offering a captivating exploration of Brahms' evolving musical language.
Brahms Symphony No. 2
For the 2nd concert in the series, audiences were treated to Brahms' Violin Concerto followed by his lyrical 2nd Symphony. The violin concerto's impassioned melodies blended seamlessly with the symphony's pastoral beauty, showcasing Brahms' mastery of orchestral colour and emotional depth.
Brahms Symphony No. 1 & Requiem
The first concert featured Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 alongside his majestic 1st Symphony. The piano concerto's thunderous virtuosity intertwined with the symphony's grandeur, offering audiences an immersive journey through Brahms' rich musical landscape.
Brahms Requiem
Brahms' Tragic Overture and Ein Deutsches Requiem created a poignant experience in the concert hall. The haunting melodies of the Tragic Overture paved the way for the profound introspection of Ein Deutsches Requiem, stirring audiences with its solemn beauty and comforting message of solace and redemption.
Beethoven 251: Symphony No. 9
At our final concert of the series, we experienced the grandeur of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 alongside the intense drama of the Coriolan Overture. From the overture's brooding turmoil to the symphony's triumphant ode to humanity, this concert united Beethoven's profound emotional range from dark and dramatic openings to the triumphant call for humanity to be united.
Beethoven 251: Symphonies No. 7 & 8
In our 4th concert we closed our week long festival with Beethoven's Symphonies 8 & 7 in a riveting showcase of rhythmic vitality and symphonic brilliance. Symphony No. 8's wit and charm intertwine with Symphony No. 7's majestic energy, offering an electrifying journey through Beethoven's mastery of form and innovation in orchestration.
Beethoven 251: Symphonies No. 5 & 6
In our 3rd concert, Beethoven's Symphonies 5 & 6 collide, contrasting fate's relentless hammer blows with nature's serene whispers. Symphony No. 5's iconic motifs confront Symphony No. 6's pastoral tranquility, revealing Beethoven's profound exploration of human emotion and the natural world in a captivating symphonic dialogue.
Beethoven 251: Symphonies No. 2 & 4
In our second concert, we revel in Beethoven's Symphony No. 4's lyrical grace, followed by the dynamic vigour of Symphony No. 2. This juxtaposition offers a nuanced exploration of Beethoven's symphonic mastery, spanning from the elegance of the classical style to the bold strides of his creative progression.

In the opening concert of the series, we experience Beethoven's evolution through Symphonies 1 & 3. From the youthful charm of Symphony No. 1 to the revolutionary spirit of Symphony No. 3, embark on a journey through Beethoven's early and middle periods, exploring his innovative orchestration and profound musical ideas.
